<br />
A rare night out for me and the Mrs - to see bands just like the olden days - and we needed a bit of something to eat prior to vino frenzy, so Bundobust street fodder was just the ticket.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/353/1881411/restaurant/West-Yorkshire/Leeds-City-Centre/Bundobust-Leeds" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bundobust on Urbanspoon" src="http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1881411/minilink.gif" style="border: none; height: 36px; width: 130px;" /></a>The excitement - well my excitement - around Bundobust has been rumbling on now for some 18 months or so, and from nothing more than rumours on the internet, and humble beginnings as 'pop up' purveyors (all <a href="http://bradfordcurry.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Bundobust" target="_blank">here</a>), Bundobust is now established as one of the coolest and trendiest bars/eateries in Leeds.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZPdnKyUyx92omfqhtgSgA64g6-YXeO5n16cTTfLuRPvDnnYhS2zVT_pMb9FtsqzfLMS3gxVxfHk6iZggGIa90yhhsRm2q5jW6CA8dKhhAJDf_dcuGNhAiKqozLXOMapouOFiRDDL5THL9/s640/blogger-image-1908154857.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZPdnKyUyx92omfqhtgSgA64g6-YXeO5n16cTTfLuRPvDnnYhS2zVT_pMb9FtsqzfLMS3gxVxfHk6iZggGIa90yhhsRm2q5jW6CA8dKhhAJDf_dcuGNhAiKqozLXOMapouOFiRDDL5THL9/s400/blogger-image-1908154857.jpg" width="296" /></a>And cool and trendy it is indeed. Indian influenced wiring dangles exposed light bulbs from the ceilings, and ramshackle wall furniture made from old doors, are, I guess supposed to be reminiscent of some Mumbai slum or other. Bundobust is positioned in the bottom(ish) part of town, near the train station which, perhaps, is not historically one of the most salubrious areas of town, but is now much improved, and close to the new Trinity Centre, and also the likes of Laynes Espresso and Friends of Ham. It's a part of town much improved recently and on the up and up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Born from a collaboration of the Sparrow Bier Cafe and Prashad, both Bradford institutions, Bundobust was set to be a winner. I'd say it's more bar than restaurant, but they have stuck to their guns and deliver Indian inspired street food. All presented in little paper bowls.<br />
<br />
The menu is a fairly stripped down affair, of about twelve street food dishes, ranging in price from £2.50, for spicy nuts, all the way up to £6/pot for the likes of Dosa (stuffed pancakes) and Idli Sambhar (rice dumplings). Then there is a rather healthy craft beer, wine and cocktails menu also. Indeed, far more extensive than the food menu.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a>We went for Bundo Chaat (£4), Onion Gobi Bhaji Bhaji (£4) and Masala Dosa (£6)... all to share... and with the bottle of house wine (£17) it all came to £31! Now, to Bradford Curry standards this is pretty dear - and we are well in hearty snack territory here rather than gut busting belly buster fill up! But we have to put things into context I guess - for middle of Leeds prices it isn't bad. And you get the swish environs, town centre location, hipster crowd and groovy funky music. Typical Leeds night out kind of vibe. So, I can handle the price, and I can handle the economic portion sizes.... but... BUT... only if it tastes good.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
The <b>Onion Gobi Bhaji Bhaji</b> was billed at the 'Ultimate Bhaji', of onion, cauliflower and spinach, and was served in the papery bowl, on top of a descent smear fiery and sweet chutney. Essentially a very good bhaji. Three crispy balls, which were just about worthy of two bites each, relenting to soft fully innards. A full flavour provided by the mix of onions with the cauli. and spinach was rather satisfying. In addition, there was some spice and fire, but was unsure if it originated from the chutney of from the bhaji itself?</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
On to the <b>Masala Dosa</b>. The two small rolls in a paper cup presentation was certainly more quirky the more traditional large plate filling dosa I am more familiar with. However, that is by the by really and, with all things being equal, the flavour of these finger food Dosa's (Dosii??) was there. The Dosa's were sat end on in the tub and were actually sat in the thin lentil soup <i>sic</i> (sambar) and this provided the only bugbear really - the dosa ends began to dissolve in the sambar! It ended up becoming a bit messy! However, all the hallmark slightly sour flavours from the fermented batter used for the dosa itself, the spicy sambar, and the cooling coconut chutney were present. So great all round... except for the slightly soggy ends! </div>

Finally we come to the <b>Bundo Chaat</b>. We thought this was the stand out dish of the trio we tried. Crunchy samosa pastry with chickpeas and potatoes, then smothered in tamarind and yoghurt. An explosion of flavours with every mouthful with the sour tamarind tamed by the soothing yoghurt. Then crunch from the pastry and substance from the chickpeas. Yes, very yummy.<br />
<br />
We thoroughly enjoyed out first proper Bundobust experience. It really is a cool kind of place and location, and provides a unique eating experience. We will visit more often for a relaxing drinks and snacks.</div>

The <a href="http://www.internationalrestaurantbradford.co.uk/" target="_blank">International</a> ticked the boxes this time, as is one of my favourite Bradford Curry eating establishments.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/353/1482468/restaurant/West-Yorkshire/International-Bradford" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img alt="International on Urbanspoon" src="http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1482468/minilink.gif" style="border: none; height: 36px; width: 130px;" /></a>I think pound for pound International might - and I stress <i>might</i> - be my favourite all rounder, as it's consistently good across the whole menu (the bits I've tried at least)</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here we are. Sat down in the corner. Our Thomas strapped in his seat, and popadoms and pickle tray arrive swiftly with the menu. It really is excellent service... and soon the waiter arrives. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNiRSWOhyphenhyphenGViCadSorij8B0QbPH7ZTS9qc3s4hvCrU4AsfITZVZVua2LzChRVASNbvV9kbtj3ayqiHJTsRoPLTUE5v2ITkPlXwZTrnd3oDoa19NT8tY8eHcmV6mN4jbWZBg5si0sh1G2dR/s640/blogger-image-878626766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNiRSWOhyphenhyphenGViCadSorij8B0QbPH7ZTS9qc3s4hvCrU4AsfITZVZVua2LzChRVASNbvV9kbtj3ayqiHJTsRoPLTUE5v2ITkPlXwZTrnd3oDoa19NT8tY8eHcmV6mN4jbWZBg5si0sh1G2dR/s200/blogger-image-878626766.jpg" width="200" /></a>Lamb Methi for me, with garlic nann (plain naan/chapatis/rotis are included in the price of a main course). Lamb Methi isn't on the menu as such - a chicken version is - but I often order it and the waiters never seem phased by a request beyond the listed fare. To be honest, seen as how a Chicken Methi is listed, I can't imaging it beyond the wit of man to rattle a Lamb Methi up but, yet again, another tick for International.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

As per all International curries, the Lamb Methi stacked up well against all other curries, and was textbook Bradfordian in the dark, rich, dry (i.e. not soupy) way. Also, not too salty, which the International can be a tad guilty of sometimes!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The naan was fresh and fluffy and garlicy and ace. Perfect.<br />
<br />
Again and again and again International hits the spot perfectly. It is all round top draw Bradford Curry eating at its best.</div>

So no Bradford Curry, boo, but if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods, I can assure you, all is not lost! Milton Keynes does do curry, did provide a great weekend away, and everybody was lovely.</div>

Finding myself wandering through a local, almost subterranean, street market, located beneath the flyover interchange of Midsummer Boulevard and Secklow Gate, in the centre of town, I happened upon a little street food van with a rather tempting looking menu, and enough peeps hovering around on patio furniture to suggest this place knew what they were doing. It was call Taste of Paradise.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All I wanted was a little snack to tide me on, and the Tadka Daal (sic) with Rotis sprang out at me. It wasn't much - £3-£4 I seem to remember! Bargain.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The van was busy but my dish soon arrived. The lady was very attentive. She gave me my dish with one roti, and told me a second one would be along in a minute - indeed it was. The Daal was truly speldid. Creamy and warming on the cold evening. It was tarka'd to perfection and had that hot spicy, slightly burned flavour to it. A little bit of heat to warm the cockles too. The lady kept shouting over to make sure everything was OK - it was.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I got speaking to a Father and daughter who were sat waiting for their food on the same table as me. It was their first visit too. They said they had had Taste of Paradise recommended to them by a friend and decided to give it a go. I assured them that if they received food as good as what I had just eaten they would be far from disappointed. They seemed pleased with my input, and with that I then bid them a fond farewell, thanked the lady for my daal, and wandered on my way into the darkness.</div>

Is Akbar's the finest Bradford Curry eating experience in Bradford? The eternal question has just reared its head yet again, following a fantastic trip to the new (new to me but has now been open a while to be fair) <a href="http://www.akbars.co.uk/bradford-caf%C3%A9-de-akbar" target="_blank">Cafe de Akbar</a>.</div>

I've not been to an Akbar's restaurant for a while now - not since the original <a href="http://bradfordcurry.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Akbars%20The%20Cafe" target="_blank">Akbar's The Cafe</a> closed anyway, and the main restaurant is just too much of a 'night out' for me these days - so it was good to return to the relaxed and easy going cafe style experience. Indeed, on entering Cafe de Akbar, it is fairly apparent it is essentially the same as the original Akbar's The Cafe. And not forgetting Akbar's were among the first to branch out to the cafe bar style, and to offer a menu beyond the restrictions of the traditional curry house. Pasta, steaks and shepherd's pie - admittedly with an Asian twist - sit along side more familiar curry restaurant fare (and also includes - for the less squeamish - the likes of tripe and brains!).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, as nice as an Asian twisted shepherd's pie may be, it's for curry to Akbar's we come.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
Before we get to the food, I must say that the service we received was second to non. Our waiter was very friendly, polite, and knowledgeable about the product, and even with the slight mess (very slight) our one year old left on the floor, he wouldn't allow us to clean it up (something the Mrs and I always do - ie our mess = we clean it up!).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, Lamb Handi with additional chickpeas, and a garlic naan were ordered by me. I was asked what strength, or if I wanted Asian Style - and the waiter went to lengths explain that Asian Style is more a blend of spices to better replicate a more traditional flavour, rather than just banging in loads of chilli powder! I thought that that was what the curry should be in the first place... but I didn't say anything and opted for Asian Style. Lynda selected Fish Karahi, with Rotis. And we went for the jug of lassi too!<br />

We quizzed the waiter for more info on suitable less spicy options on the menu for the children. We thought we might go down the Shepard's Pie route, but he seemed to suggest the 'Asian Twist' gives a fair amount of spice, and would perhaps not be the best option. We settled on chicken tikka - and the waiter said they would wash the majority of the spices off prior to cooking. More of the that good Akbar's service.<br />

All freshly cooked - indeed, a trip to the toilet, reveals windowed swing doors to the kitchen, with massive stoves and numerous pots and pans beyond - so delivery to the table is not instantaneous, but well within the realms of common decency.<br />
<br />
Truly exceptional. The Asian Style Lamb Handi with Chickpeas was truly exceptional! It had everything a good curry should possess to me. Right amount of heat to let you know you're actually eating a curry, and perfectly seasoned too. Deep and rich, and sometimes almost sweet, flavours, from the sauce. Good quality and quantity of meat, with meaty flavours coming through. And texturally substantial enough to withstand gravity and not ooze everywhere. It was not swimming in oil either. Nothing more to say really, just gorgeous. The Garlic Naan was on a different planet too! Just look at the photo above and look at the amount of garlic on it! It was blow your head off garlicy (a good thing) and fresh and had soft gooey bits and crispy bits and... and... and... was just yum yum yum!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
True to their word the chicken tikka was prepared sympathetically with the children in mid, and was very nice in that tandoored way with it's little crispy and charred bits. The spicing was very mild and subtle and went down fairly well with the kids... the chips went down better! Ggrrrr! THEY WILL LEARN ONE DAY! I didn't really try the Fish Karahi, but seemed to be well appreciated by Lynda.</div>

And so it's back to the Caribbean... Well, when I say 'Caribbean' I really mean Leeds! Well, to be fair, a very rainy autumnal lunch time in Leeds... It simply screams the Caribbean doesn't it? OK - I am being a bit sarcastic - but if a rainy and cold Leeds doesn't feel like the Caribbean <a href="http://maureenscaribbeantakeaway.co.uk/" target="_blank">Maureen's Caribbean Takeaway</a>, on Roundhay Road, will certainly make you feel half way there!</div>

Yes there were/are exceptions to this rule (more on this in a minute) and, even though I still by and large stand by my tenet, Leeds has improved 100% recently... what with Trinity Kitchen and the Belgrave Music Hall and the like, and all this kind of trendy street food vibe. One enduring decent eating experiences in Leeds for me has always been the West Indian cuisine up Chapeltown/Harehills way. There are quite a few establishments serving up the Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, and the like, usually in an informal cafe style environment. This is a curry blog though, so I tend to keep to the Curry Goat, if I intend to blog about it.<br />

Maureen's has one of the best reputations in the area, and I've heard her interviewed on the radio, and also here stall at the annual West Indian Carvival, Chapeltown. always has the longest queue on site. Maureen's gaff seats about 16 punteres. Its pretty basic stuff - but is supposed to be - and is clean and presentable. A large menu sits above the counter - here you order. Curry Goat, Rice and Peas was the order - Small - £5. Good value. A larger portion is available for £6. Then Maureen invited me to take a seat. A few others were in chowing down, and more followed, and further takeaway only punters came and went. So a bustling cafe. Nice.</div>

Additional carrots and potatoes were present in the dish, and added to the texture and flavour rather than being there simply to bulk the curry out and compensate for lack of meat. Essentially pretty mild in flavour but did eventually develop a bit of a bite on the back of the palate. I helped it along (carefully!!) with the restrained application of West Indian Hot Pepper Sauce, which was on the table along with other condiments, including salt. However, the dish was seasoned perfectly so no need for the salt. It was alround good tasting, fresh, oozed quality and was generally top draw. The accompanying rice and peas were good and fresh also, and as always is a match made in heaven when mated with the Curry Goat.</div>

The Palak Gosht was served sizzlingly hot in an impressive looking metal bowl and was verging on perfect for me. Proper dark and rich - the kind of dark and rich produced from properly cooked down onions. I think ghee must have been used... adding to the richness. There was an underlying sweetness, and yummy lingering after taste. Although containing spinach, there was little of that characteristic irony flavour to the dish, and it was all about the richness.</div>

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Texturally, the Palak Gosht was slightly saucy, but certainly robust enough to stand proud in the bowl and also once transferred to plate. No oozing and little bleeding of oil/ghee. Meat quota good, and was present in every mouth watering mouthful. Quality was essentially melt in the mouth - top marks. </div>

I understand Amaan's Grill House to have been started by two guys who split from the Lumb Lane Sweet Centre empire, and indeed the take away menu promises 'well know chefs' with over 25yrs experience serving the community. The cool interior decor, friendly and efficient service, and bustling little restaurant are evidence of this, and Amaan's Grill House should be on everyone's Must Visit list.</div>

Well we've done it again - the mighty Bradford and Bradford Curry has retained the title of Curry Capital of Britain for the forth year on the bounce - very impressive. The results:<br />
<br />
1 - Bradford<br />
2 - Brighton<br />
3 - Birmingham<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Spicy Corner is located to the northeast of the city centre, and is away from the Bradford Curry hotspots of the Uni or Leeds Road say, and is somewhat off the beaten track. A bit of a funny area of town really. Having said that it is just across the road from the Forster Square shopping estate, so benefits from substantial footfall I would have thought. The only eating alternative in the vicinity is a Maccy D's on the estate itself. </div>

For my lunch time visit I was met by a bit of a desolate restaurant! It was very quiet with only two others in, and both sat by the door waiting for take away. No sign of any staff, so I plonked down on one of the weirdly burgundy and cream rubbery table clothed tables in front of the big windows (see photo above). Mistake! You see, it was a beautifully sunny day, and sun was streaming through the windows - I baked! Sunglasses on and dripping in sweat I sat patiently. Eerily quiet... the kitchen must be out the back so there was no noise what so ever!<br />
<br />
Not too long before a member of staff (waiter/cook/both/??) arrived to take my order. I ordered lamb karahi with a garlic naan - a good staple middle of the road dish. Bread not included at Spicy Corner note. The waiter/cook sort of kept glancing towards the ceiling whilst taking my order, in a way that suggested he was either thinking if he could cook my order, or if he had the ingredients or something... was a bit weird but guessing it was just be a mannerism... I was asked my preferred heat which is a nice touch - predictable I responded with 'medium'.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Slow! Very slow!! Perhaps is was the baking heat I was sat in, but my food seemed to take an age to arrive. And again the lack of any sound whatsoever was disconcerting. Eventually a audible 'tshh' noise - the noise of something moist hitting something hot - was heard emanating from depths of the restaurant somewhere, and this indeed signalled the arrival of my dish.<br />
<br />
The Lamb Karahi certainly looked the business, and was presented in a piping hot, large, and shallow Karahi dish. Must have been the origins of the 'tshss'ings' no doubt. However, I afraid to say that, on eating, for me, it was a little underwhelming. The Karahi was overall bland and rather dull. In density seemingly quite Bradfordian, but the light coloured sauce lacked the familiar depth of flavour. The meat was very tough too, and took some chewing, and I was glad when the last mouthful was swallowed! It's not often I say that. It sat heavily on the belly, and I felt like one of those cartoons where the neck expands as something is swallowed!<br />
<br />
The Naan faired no better... suspiciously circular, and fork marked... it was dry and tasted more of ginger than garlic. Allied to the chewy meat, I was glad of my jug of water!</div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't like being negative in my blogs, but Spicy Corner just didn't cut the mustard today. After this visit I may not rush back, but will have to give it a second go in the name of research and fairness... I promise. Having said that, if I was out and about with friends and they said "lets go for a quick curry in Spicy Corner?" I would not hesitate. Restaurants in Bradford set the Bradford Curry quality bar very high, and sometimes, just sometimes, some fall short - It's been known to happen to the best of them! </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but when not eating curry and/or drinking beer, I quite like to go for a ride on my push bike... So what is any self respecting Bradford Curry eating cyclist to do when out on the road? Samosa's?? Maybe... and it has been considered! Well, the answer may be here with the new <a href="http://www.mulebar.com/collections/energy-bars/products/eastern-express">Eastern Express Energy Bar</a> from <a href="http://www.mulebar.com/">Mule</a>.</div>

It's not often I manage to merge two of my main interests of bike riding and Bradford Curry eating into one blog post - never the twain shall meet so to speak - but sometimes it has been know for me to stop off on the way to races for a chickpea curry breakfast - only THE breakfast of champions that is (<a href="http://teamherecomethebelgians.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/playing-points-game-lessons-learnt-and.html">here</a>).</div>

It was with great interest and excitement I received news from a Mule Bar representative regarding their new savoury Eastern Express Bar, and asking if I'd like to try them, and also the offer of samples! Ooo - short armed and deep pocketed Yorkshire man me wasn't going to turn down a freebie no matter what.. so I gleefully accepted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">The reason for my excitement was genuine, as it has emerged over the years that one thing that I find difficult on a long strenuous bike ride is fuelling, and the often sickly sweet energy bars, gels and drinks are often too much for me! To avoid the sickly sweet, I can often be seen leaning on my bars unwrapping pork pies!</span></div>

So is the new Mule Bar Eastern Express the solution to my needs? Basically... yes! Essentially the bar comprises oats and nuts glued together with syrup - so still a little bit sweet. But the kicker is the spices! Coriander, cumin, garam masala, all the usual curry suspects, are present, and also cayenne pepper, which really does add a dollop of heat to each mouthful! Really pretty good, savoury and warming. If I had to put a finger on the flavour, it reminded me of licking the bowl of a a spicy fruit cake batter mixture - all fruity, sticky and spicy, but with added heat - rather than a full blown Lamb and Spinach and Garlic Naan, so to speak.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Eastern Express will be making it's way into my cycling jersey pockets in the future I'm sure.</div>

<a href="http://www.dhesigrill.co.uk/">Dhesi Grill</a> is a really great cafe bar up Lilycroft Road, just above Lister's Mill there - ya' know... the massive chimney dominating the Bradford skyline. Worth a gander in itself Lister's Mill if not seen before.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, Dhesi Grill represent the 'new breed' cafe bar and specialises in grills mainly, but with curries too. There are also a whole host of steaks, burgers, wraps, and stir fries even. Beverages include teas, coffees, lassi, shakes... no beer, and there are also deserts and cakes! Basically, anything anyone could ever desire, there is probably a option to cater.</div>

A massive open kitchen is off to one side as you enter, and crammed full of marinating meat, and I also spotted what looked like whole Sea Bass and maybe Bream?? Already to get slapped onto the BBQ behind the counter.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So we have a bustling cafe bar, all cream leatherette and dark wood, serving a varied menu. All good.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The little boy - Thomas - was asleep, and I gently carried him into the restaurant in his car seat, and plonked him down on a bench seat in a corner next to me. The waiter initially wanted us to sit in the window at a two seater table, and between two other tables of diners! But once I drew his attention to my predicament of sleeping baby, in car seat, etc, he offered us the slightly bigger table with said bench. I noticed a stack of high chairs in the corner, but we didn't use one on this occasion.</div>

Anyway, the peace was soon disrupted when Thomas awoke with a start! Soon settled though - and without too much disturbance to my fellow diners I don't think - and just in time for the fodder to arrive too. All the meats were marinated and grilled to perfection. Both the Chicken Boti and Shashlik were excellent, and provided good flavoursome eating with the latter I think providing a little more spicy heat. The Shahslik also provided the grilled and slightly charred vegetables including peppers and onions. The Lamb Boti was incredibly tender to the point of me almost thinking it was some sort of Kofta Kebab or something! Really soft. But also possessing good strong flavours for the marinade and grilling cooking process. Finishing off with the Seekh - it was a good and solid version with no complaints, and the same went for the naan also. Freshly tandored, with the fluffy and crispy bits in all the right places. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All in all a good solid meal. I had no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed my grill. It was good to have something a little different too. Having said that, I will be returning soon to sample a full blown curry and from what I've seen so far It's going to be good.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Much has been written regarding the quality of the Sheesh Mahal dining experience, so I shan't go into too much detail again here. But... essentially..., our early lunch time visit was greeted by an initially empty restaurant, which soon began to fill as peoples bellies began to rumble. The usual quick and friendly service was in evidence, as was the complimentary popadons and pickle to nibble on whilst deciding. So what to have? The Methie is one of my Bradford Curry highlights, but to day felt like a Pathia day...</div>

Pathia - A hot and sour dish cooked using fresh chilli, lemon juice (sic). Well, it was indeed just that - I went for the mutton variety. The Pathia was super dry in the Sheesh Mahal, and Bradford, way, and deconstructed in appearance, with the major elements visible. It was a substantially hearty portion, dense with meat - cut small - with barely any evidence of sauce at all! The saucy aspect was so minimal that even browned markings on the meat from the fast and hot cooking process were noticeable. The meat on this occasion was perhaps a little tough but packed, infused even, with the sour lemon juicy zingy hit. It packed a punch too, with plenty of heat, but not uncomfortably so. The dish was perfectly seasoned and had added vibrancy from fresh coriander. It was a great dish.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The two perfect roti's (either chapati's, naan or roti's are included in the price of the curry) were more than enough bread for the curry. Limited dippage, due to minimal sauce, but utilised effectively to transfer bucket loads of Pathia to my mouth - nothing more needed.</div>

After a rather lengthy refurbishment, Mughals is now back open and fully operational. On entering, it is clear a total overhaul has been undertaken. The main counter has been moved and is now perpendicular to the entrance, off to the left, but the main semi open kitchen and general shape of the room have remained essentially the same. The extra room provided with the sweet counter re-positioning, is now filled with extra tables and chairs. The decore is all modern cream floor tiles, dark wood and cream leatherette seats. Nice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An early visit for me for my first visit since the refurb, so channa puri breakfast was ordered. I fancied a pink tea but... n<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">o pink tea! I was told it was being made and was 4hrs away! <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">The channa I think is cooked fresh so takes a couple ofminutes to arrive. It's very good and is smooth and mild with subtle flavour of curry - similar to chipshop curry almost I suppose - but don't let that comparison jade your ideas of what is on offer - it's far superior. A dollop of lime pickle stirred through at the end adds sour blasts periodically! Bang! No cutlery so all must be conveyed on the three greasy puris which isn't a problem but can get messy! It is just the most wonderful breakfast experience by far.... Especially when the £2.50 asking price is factored in too.</span></div>

Akmal's - located on the edge of Woodhouse Moor in the heart of Studentville, Leeds - is, I understand, affectionately known locally as 'The Toilet', due to the buildings former usage. Yes, that's right, Akmal's resides in the Parks former public conveniences. Now, however, there is no evidence of this lavatorial history, the the Bistro is pretty swish inside with exposed brick walls, parquet flooring and dark wood tables. We visited on a hot summers evening, and I found the restaurant to be bright and airy, and it had large windows looking out over the park - quite picturesque really.</div>

Homework prior to our visit revealed no websites and not much info at all really, only the rather unkempt Facebook page listed above. The usual TripAdvisor reviews were promising, and a good <a href="http://chickeninacherrysauce.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/chocolate-curry-yes-chocolate-curry.html" target="_blank">Blog</a> I discovered... talked of a Chocolate Curry. That's right - CHOCOLATE CURRY! This would definitely be on the hit list.</div>

Our large 'work night out' party of about 15 punters, were first in Akmal's, but soon, more people arrived, and Akmal's eventually generated a decent relaxed and free and easy feeling atmosphere. Popadoms and pickles were immediately presented at the table as we sat, along with the menus. Drinks order soon followed.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I say, we were a large party, so service wasn't lightening quick - and we weren't expecting it to be. But the service we received, I presume from Mr Akmal, was very friendly and efficient, and we were made to feel right at home.</div>

The Mixed Sizzling Kebab with Onion Bhaji on the side was the starters ordered to share at our end of the table. The Mixed Kebab did indeed arrive sizzling away on freshly cut onions, on a sizzling skillet, and looked promising. However, the Seekh seemed rewarmed and stale - a bit thin n dry. Shami ok. However, the chicken tikka was top draw. Fresh n tasty. So a bit of a mixed bag to start. </div>

So... Chocolate Delight (as the chocolate curry is referred to on the menu) - 'a dish for the chic and trendy...' apparently - in medium. Mild or medium are mentioned in the blurb in the menu, but Mr Akmal assured me I could have it as hot as I liked! Having recently fallen foul of bravado, I steered cautiously and stuck with medium - I certainly didn't want a overly creamy korma style experience that was for sure... but I didn't want my face burning off either! The eagerly anticipated Chocolate Delight arrived. Very brown - as you might expect - and gloopy looking! A definite chocolaty aroma filled the air, married to the more common spicy smells associated with a curry. Really strange in a good way - very rich. I found the chocolate not overwhelming, but added depth, richness and some sweetness. The subtle chocolate flavors arrived on the back of the palate. Although quite sweet overall, I found the dish to have enough of a savory bite to compensate, so did not become sickly. My medium spiced version had a slight after heat but was by no means hot. I could've upped the heat easily, and think next time I will. I was too busy concentrating on the Chocolate Delight to even notice my naan. I presume it must have been fine and traversed my gullet without note. I don't recall any garlic/chocolate clashes.</div>

Akmal's is licensed - Kingfisher and Carling were the lagers on offer I believe - but it is also possible to BYO, which is nice. I went for the Kingfisher - well several to be honest! The beer did seem a bit flat - may be poured from bottles - I wasn't sure. Tasted alright though so was fine.</div>

<b><u>Highlights</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Chocolate Delight it has to be. Not my usual style of curry but was brilliant for a change and for the novelty value. Not that the Chocolate Delight was gimmick in any way I trust you understand. The venue, despite it Public Convenience history, was a pleasant enough place to spend some time dining, and the staff were friendly too.</div>

<b><u>Low Lights</u></b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The general mixed bag of the Mixed Grill starter. Some good bits and some not so good. Shame but just too average for me.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><u>The Damage</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn't all that cheap! The Chocolate Delight was the best part of £10 alone! Although I do think it was the most - or one of the most - expensive dishes on the menu. With being a work night out of 15 or so diners I didn't see the overall bill. However, the £10/Chocolate Delight did raise an eyebrow with me. Pretty tight me though!</div>

<b><u>Aftershock</u></b></div>
<br />
Feeling stuffed to the gills we retired to a nearby hostelry, and tried to fend off the immediate urge to nap, and set to salvaging our night out. The curry eventually settled, leaving room for a few pints as we wandered towards Leeds City Center... thoughts of our next curry already entering our brains! <br />
<br />
<b><u>Overall</u></b></div>
<div>
<br />
Overall it's a thumbs up from me. Although I did enjoy my Akmal's experience very much, it did fall a little short in some areas for me but, then again, Akmal's was very good in others.<br />

Got to be... just look at the prices... Medium curries (curries come in medium and large portions) from £3.50, Naan Kebabs from £2, Naan 50p, 4No, Rotis £1!!!! Unbelievable! And you know what? It was alright - well good even. I went for Medium Meat Masala and Naan Bread - £4.50. Let me give a little more detail:</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be fair, Amaans is more a take-away, rather than sit down curry cafe or restaurant, but there were four or five tables inside - enough seating for a few small parties of diners - and the place was presentable. A counter and open kitchen is to the back of the shop - à la a take-away. On ordering, the encouraging sounds of banging and clattering started in earnest.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The decent portion of curry - remember this is the medium sized option - arrived on a metal plate with a small pile of lettuce on the site, and a plastic spoon. The naan was presented to the side on a little plastic basket, lined with the opened up wrapping from a Walkers Crisps Multi Pack! Beef I think? Well it was brown at least! Novel, but no reason to turn a nose - just re-cycling.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All was good - the curry was fresh and tasty with good quality melt in the mouth meat. And was consistent with what I considered earlier to be the sounds of a freshly prepped dish. Not oily at all and, when compared to the Big Dogs in town, stood up well to comparison. Naan was good too.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So no complaints. In fact nothing but praise really. Fair do's, not the kind of place for a first date perhaps, but what can you say... Amaans seems to be knocking out pretty decent quality curries at a totally VFM price point. I only popped in for a quick dinner and was dealt with efficiently and friendlily. Further investigation will be undertaken.</div>

<span style="text-align: justify;">I've been a bit slack recently with my Blogging, and I was looking forward to the World Curry Festival 2014 for a bit of inspiration and something to get my teeth into.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
However, it pains me to say that this year it just didn't seem to cut the mustard with me! All the stalls seem to be pedaling the same old kebabs (various) on naan - and there was just no variety. Having said that there was a West Indian joint doing the classic Curry Goat, Jerk Chickens etc, and another stall knocking out sort of North African/Lebanese cuisine. The later exhibited the largest queue on site, so guessing most punters had discovered the same lack of variety I had!</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After wondering up and down a couple of times I did initially err towards a stall doing the kebabs (the reputable <a href="http://bradfordcurry.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Zaara%27s" target="_blank">Zaara's</a> I think) but, ear wigging into the conversation the bloke ahead of me was having with the proprietor, regarding the number of stalls putting out kebabs on naans, and then seeing the vendor produce a tortilla wrap in which to place the kebabs, I left the queue. The North African/Lebanese stall still had a massive queue, so I headed towards the West Indian stall.</div>

Nice people producing nice smells and good looking fodder was up my street, and Curry Goat was ordered... with rice and peas of course. The dish was smashing and had an excellent amount of heat added to the classic coconut based curry and with a good quantity of goat. The rice and peas were fresh and smooth tasting. All round good stuff.</div>

Others than that I'm afraid to say the day was all about splashing around in the City Park fountains. These are great and lots of fun for kids... and grown ups. Who needs the seaside.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yaadgaar, on Leeds Road, Bradford must be fairly new - or at least very well kept, as it all seems shiny and very clean. As you enter, a counter, spread well with traditional sweets, greets you perpendicularly to the frontage of the shop, and there are a couple of small tables and bars with high stools. Pretty relaxed feel to the place. Posters on the walls promise a plethora of products, both sweet and savory, and all looks very nice.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Late Breakfast was the order of the day, but rather than messing about sitting and bothering with a menu... "Do you do Chana Puri Breakfast please?" I chimed to the bloke behind the counter.... seemed the perfect opening gambit. "We do the the Chana, but not Puri's..." "Puris are pretty greasy... but we do Parathas if you like?" "I'll have that then!" Sorted. Happy days.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I took my seat facing a little stumpy wall! Quite why I have no idea... sitting looking at a wall! Tsk! Anyway, after a bit of banging and clattering the Chana and Parathas arrived, and the guy was attentive and asked if I wanted pickle and if all was OK. I fancied a bit of pickle on the side, so off he scurried. It soon appeared.</div>

It doesn't matter, just an observation. Certainly the parathas has a ready made aspect to them. However, they were very flavourful, in that fried bread kind of way and were all warm, crispy and flaky, and gooy in the middle, a little like flattened and fresh croissants. Quite quite moreish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The chana were pretty oily but tasted right enough. Fairly sort of plain tasting and really benefited from the addition of the pickle to zing things up a bit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A good little snack breakfast for ~£3.50, so no complaints. I'll definitely visit again, and maybe sample some sweets, samosa chaat, faloodao and Kashmiri tea. </div>

Recently I was approached (via the Blog) by some friends from out of town who were interested in learning more of the famous Bradford Curry. They asked primarily about the spicy aspect of Bradford Curry... "Is anywhere famous for doing really spicy food", "Where does the spiciest?" They asked.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQYEUMH8IzhtwiHQ2SujmxQLzALRy_llyPOBhK2rpYkh-ZS7ipsGWWz6uwb4Jkh95QCH4iCfELzmKb0aTpnusSHg8c0pd549J8zYpm-xK1OkogDAXilXy2NUN845PyIq_fy0gSUSgBPhYQ/s1600/IMG_3261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQYEUMH8IzhtwiHQ2SujmxQLzALRy_llyPOBhK2rpYkh-ZS7ipsGWWz6uwb4Jkh95QCH4iCfELzmKb0aTpnusSHg8c0pd549J8zYpm-xK1OkogDAXilXy2NUN845PyIq_fy0gSUSgBPhYQ/s1600/IMG_3261.JPG" height="238" width="320" /></a>I had a think, and eventually had to rather sheepishly admit to not knowing? I couldn't think of anywhere necessarily 'famous' for doing spicy (or hot I guessed was what was being alluded to). Once I had pondered further, I concluded that Bradford is the best in the country for many reasons, and doesn't need to do the gimmicky/food challenge type of thing at all. However, I did stress to my friends, that in Bradford most restaurants will tailor their dishes to your tastes. More often than not one is asked as to preferred spiciness. You can probably have any dish you prefer as hot as you like!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Having said that, I did reminisce, about the days when me and the Mrs first started going out, and how I used to impressed her with my abilities at eating Vindaloos etc, and how it must have worked because we are still married! But, more recently, actual taste has taken over as the driving force when it comes to enjoying a curry, rather than the laddy bravado "I can take double anything you can!" Type of thing!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQhoEH-55BZZ2tFdsw-cqH-TaZFF0I6h3E77d2OwA2VL0RS_MZrvWdtAPxS-WFABVCT7za-gQUhtLu-gE7V11-PgNFUfy_ngWxfYSsDEt47LEWcRouh_V7s_prdho98uwLvok45Exz0ZQr/s1600/IMG_3262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQhoEH-55BZZ2tFdsw-cqH-TaZFF0I6h3E77d2OwA2VL0RS_MZrvWdtAPxS-WFABVCT7za-gQUhtLu-gE7V11-PgNFUfy_ngWxfYSsDEt47LEWcRouh_V7s_prdho98uwLvok45Exz0ZQr/s1600/IMG_3262.JPG" height="238" width="320" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, I thought I'd best reacquaint myself with the hotter, bog standard, end of the curry scale... And to this end, to the <a href="http://www.internationalrestaurantbradford.co.uk/" target="_blank">International</a> I went. I bottled the Vindaloo though! So instead went for Lamb Madras. In the early days of my curry eating career, a Madras was my staple, and thought, therefore, a fitting benchmark.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Lamb Madras was initially hottish, but not too bad. It was, however, a builder, and by end my nose was running and my tongue tender! I was glad of the final mouthful! It possessed the consistency of loose gravy with chunks of meat swimming about. No determinable elements to the gravy, except for welcomed flecks of herb, and all in all it looked a little bit old fashioned. The curry sauce did have a sharp peppery taste and the meat was tender, and the two crispy and fresh rotis were ample bread for the dish. As expected from international it was very good and of high quality. But is was perhaps a little one dimensional when compared with curries from the Special Menu.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJWM4DYC5Amk1tLK1MKA_kBtt_23L453NxL0drSedQulMSapqqRZ_VN7WB4OFYNHbrARgVD0Go399AkcD4aYfJ-lUT1OyOEgpJpXmnF4OfCBLOG1oMc2RlGh6OBXcCAmlpBK01vmt4YDWx/s1600/IMG_3263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJWM4DYC5Amk1tLK1MKA_kBtt_23L453NxL0drSedQulMSapqqRZ_VN7WB4OFYNHbrARgVD0Go399AkcD4aYfJ-lUT1OyOEgpJpXmnF4OfCBLOG1oMc2RlGh6OBXcCAmlpBK01vmt4YDWx/s1600/IMG_3263.JPG" height="475" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As a post meal treat I sampled an Asian Tea - no 'pink tea' at the International so the recommended Asian Tea would suffice. Visually more like a traditional English tea, it was rich and milky and was gently spiced with cardamon etc. It was served unsweetened and with a bowl of sugar. A couple of teaspoons of sugar for me made all the difference and the tea really took on a more decadent feel.<br />
<br />
So to sum up. It was good to revisit the Madras, but I feel my taste buds and expectations have moved on somewhat. The International provided a superb Madras, no question, but I was left feeling like I'd missed out a tad.<br />

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Food-Republic-Bradford/195199590498436" target="_blank">Food Republic</a> on Leeds Road, Bradford, is a bit of an enigma. Nestled as it is in the epicenter of one of Bradford's curry hot spots, it trades blows closely with Akbars and Zouk to name but two.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOtyI7lngULemHuXzSh094bjSxSWMblmCE3tAoCe-C-lT_HSragbYfty5d93COy8g8uqxoCs-OgDds8467ai65hO6MoINUmhHC1UCuya1rg0JRy-I6Ga9Ekf73sUs_ZcNcqFLKHwvSUoqE/s1600/IMG_3170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOtyI7lngULemHuXzSh094bjSxSWMblmCE3tAoCe-C-lT_HSragbYfty5d93COy8g8uqxoCs-OgDds8467ai65hO6MoINUmhHC1UCuya1rg0JRy-I6Ga9Ekf73sUs_ZcNcqFLKHwvSUoqE/s1600/IMG_3170.JPG" height="474" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although driven past on numerous occasions, I'd never ventured in for fodder! Peering through the window had given me the impression (from a muraled rear wall, visible from the car) that Food Republic concentrated more on coffee, paninis, pastries, etc, rather than curry.</div>
<br />
However, on this occasion, a sign in the window promised Karahi with Naan or Rotis. Time to give it a whirl. Once sat at my table and reading the menu, it became obvious my initial ideas of what Food Republic was all about were a little off the mark. Here is one of the new fangled cafe bar type eateries. Although not wall to wall curries (the menu had four I believe and some biryanis), a massive Asian inspired grill menu was the main attraction. The easy to follow menu utilised colour coding to simplify the ordering process. You selected your grill of choice which had three prices adjacent in different colours - each colour represented either naan, rice, chips, etc. Pretty simple really. However, I've not fully embraced the 'grill' yet, so Meat Karahi it was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDb5bhO6FTbigqCRr652XF_b6sDvy_JVs_k57JkmDOnMmu4XsJ39ScQPvQsYZe0Nrdmsa6Cc0MQ8d1h-8RCXowKUqhV_6U0sSdyhU5tH52LloiLi3REUhvZh-zJXDCVh9ga2bcq-5drLYe/s1600/IMG_3169.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDb5bhO6FTbigqCRr652XF_b6sDvy_JVs_k57JkmDOnMmu4XsJ39ScQPvQsYZe0Nrdmsa6Cc0MQ8d1h-8RCXowKUqhV_6U0sSdyhU5tH52LloiLi3REUhvZh-zJXDCVh9ga2bcq-5drLYe/s1600/IMG_3169.JPG" height="476" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The menu said all the food was freshly prepared and with the trendy decor etc, I was looking forward. I was not offered any heat options when ordering, but a little later I did overhear the waiter ask the question to a near by table. An easily done oversight, and I'm by no means criticizing, but merely pointing out, your curry of choice can be tailored to your personal preferences if required.<br />
<br />
The Meat Karahi arrived in good time and suggested some care had been taking in its preparation. It was light in colour, with a looseness good for dunking. A full, quality, rounded flavour was accented with strong gingery overtones and a fair slap of heat. It was quality and I enjoyed it very much.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Two massive fresh and tasty rotis were included but were no measure of my massive belly. Sauces were also provided on the side, along with water. All top quality service.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Again, Food Republic is yet another high quality Bradford eater, and is well worthy of a visit. Bradford is the Best in the World!!</div>

'The best curry in Leeds', 'consistently excellent food and service', etc. Punters on <a href="http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186411-d1316194-Reviews-Tasty_s_Karahi_Restaurant-Leeds_West_Yorkshire_England.html" target="_blank">Tripadvisor</a> are very complimentary with regard to Tasty's Karahi Restaurant.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Open for lunch, and then presume right through the closing, Tasty's is a proper little traditional style Curry House nestling at the bottom of Roundhay Road in Leeds and has plain and clean decor with red velour seats and unadorned tables.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguK1G8BRH9LLSXU940IDznp1zm1eNgQpXIvr8QH1azo6pCFauRPGcc5ARt_HIQfXUpIhKMwxT_sqdsBQmC0P19zItHkicoTZy1SlDQj_SHraHJex9bzahdITmn91Ue4FXWMmT3i2S6ujD-/s1600/14016710771_4d531f0409_z+(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguK1G8BRH9LLSXU940IDznp1zm1eNgQpXIvr8QH1azo6pCFauRPGcc5ARt_HIQfXUpIhKMwxT_sqdsBQmC0P19zItHkicoTZy1SlDQj_SHraHJex9bzahdITmn91Ue4FXWMmT3i2S6ujD-/s1600/14016710771_4d531f0409_z+(1).jpg" height="200" width="149" /></a>Given a few minutes to peruse the menu I noted all the traditional curries were covered and along with a large specials selection too, and I knew I wouldn't be left wanting. I went for the staple Meat Palak (spinach) as this is the curry I usually try everywhere for comparison. It's one my favorites too. I was asked how hot I wanted it too - nice touch. However, after recent 'manning up' episodes, I stuck with middle of the road. Three chapatis included too - the Bradford way! Happy days.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Promising sounds of sizzling, metal on metal scraping, and clattering, soon emanated from the kitchen behind, suggesting my dish was being freshly prepared. All too soon my dish arrived. Fist visual impressions were excellent, it looked super fresh and steaming. It was very Bradfordian - ie dark and dry, and stood proud in the dish. No soup here. Smelt excellent too. The curry came with side salad (fresh for a change) and yogurt sauce, and the aforementioned chapattis. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So to tucking in. Firstly I was glad opted for 'middle of the road' heat, as it was spicy enough for me. Nice tingle around the lips and throat. Lots of spinach not only added the familiar metallic flavour, but also an actual fresh tasting spinach hint. Meat quota was good and was presented in larger chunks than maybe would be expected in Bradford. Seasoning was good also, and overall the dish exhibited an all round air of quality and attention to detail. Basically it was very good. The chapattis were fluffy, hot and fresh. Not leathery.</div>
</div>

Tasty's is a brilliant little place ans so glad I came across it. Everyday day is a school day...</div>

Thursday dinner time, and my daughter Izzy's 4th Birthday treat to Lahore, and Lahore is heaving (all four floors!), with people almost queuing at the door! Very VERY popular! These trendy cafe style places, although not fully taken over from the original style 'Bradford curry house' are all the rage. Here at Lahore you are treated to trendy decor, with each floor exhibiting a slightly different colour trend, a vibrant atmos, fast and friendly service, and good value for money.<br />
<br />
Also, you get treated to a varied menu, definitely leaning towards Asian cuisine, but also including pasta dishes, burgers, steaks, paninis, etc. AND CAKES! Yes plenty of cake.</div>

To be honest, today was my little girls Birthday, so I took my John the Bradford Curry Bloogers hat off, and just decided to sit back, relax and enjoy the experience. However, me being me, I took a few nice photos I thought I'd share... and thought I'd best just add a few words to boot too.</div>

Food wise for me it was Chefs Special Desi Meat Karahi with Garlic Naan, Lynda went for Grilled Paneer on a Naan, and Izzy opted for kiddies smily faces and fish fingers! Ggrrrr! But at least it highlights that Lahore caters for everyone - no exceptions. All arrived promptly and all was very very nice.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Desi Meat Karahi possessed that full bodied and rounded curry flavour. No additional flavours such as spinach, methi, lime pickle, whatever, added the this karahi to mask the excellent taste. The Garlic naan was good fresh and fluffy also, and the meal didn't last long! The paneer on a naan was good too, grilled to perfection, and adding a lovely bbq flavour. Portion size was perhaps a little more starter than main, but this was reflected in the price. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This left plenty of room to treat ourselves to a couple of deserts! Belgian Waffle and Chocolate Fondue. No desert expert me, but I had no complaints. I concentrated on the waffle, and it was waffley, ice creamy and chocolatey! Very good. The fondue was fun and Izzy enjoyed dipping the various fruits etc in the choc... who wouldn't?</div>

We had an excellent time. Lahore is bustling and a fun and great place to visit. Smashing.</div>

The Sheesh Mahal produce an excellent and text book Bradford Curry, which is essentially dark and dry. No soupy curries here.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Methi, or fenugreek as it's perhaps more commonly known, is essentially just a bitter herb, and is famed not only for it's taste, but also for medicinal uses. The Sheesh utilise methi to the max in their Methie dishes and, like all great dishes, it's the flavour and textural balances that I think are key. The Mutton Methie is always well seasoned and spiced. The methi herb adds a unique and pleasant bitterness and, therefore, a flavour profile unlike other curries. The bitterness is subtle, however, and moreish if anything. I always think there is a sort of 'dusty' taste to the methi also.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Excellent Mutton Metie, Two Rotis, pickles, side salad and popadom for £6.50</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Also, as already mentioned is the texture of the Sheesh Mahal's curry is key to its enjoyment for me. Being of the typically Bradfordian dry variety, it stays put in the bowl, and does not seep or ooze. It is ideal when scooping with the included chappatis, rotis or naan. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As always at the Sheesh Mahal, a small accompaniment of a popadon, side salad and pickles are included and brought with the menus. So its an all-round proper Bradford Curry eating experience and all for super value for money (all the above for £6.50!) - and that's why the Sheesh rates highly with me. </div>

Difference? The proprietor recognised me from the Blog! My previous Punjabi Sizzler Blog (<a href="http://bradfordcurry.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/punjabi-sizzler-bar-and-grill-leeds.html" target="_blank">here</a>) had received a lot of traffic to be honest - so shows there's quite a buzz about this place. He's a nice guy and said he like the post. Happy days, but always a little awkward. However, I've chosen to plaster my face across the internet as some sort of curry aficionado (which I'm not!) so is bound to happen occasionally. Hey ho.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, on to the fodder. Today I tried a Seekh Kebab Wrap (for £3.50 and includes a drink) and then greedily ordered Veg Samosa Chaat (£2.50) at the last minute. I was feeling hungry the order just inexplicably and uncontrollably blurted out!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The Samosa Chaat was again excellent. Very textural with plenty of crunch, and again super sour and with a sprinkling of fresh herbs and gently warming heat. Could eat it all day!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Wrap was presented in a warp, funnily enough... as opposed to a naan or anything. Two juicy and meaty kebabs wrapped with usual kebab related grated carrot etc. I was asked how I wanted my wrap? "Everything on" was the response. Punjabi Sizzler obliged. The wrap was good and spicy without being overwhelming. A lovely lunchtime snack.<br />

Punjabi sizzler is a great place and we'll worth a trip. I need to rally the family and get down for an evening meal. From what I've experienced so far I'm sure it will be great.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This I decided needed a small celebration, and in order to celebrate properly, a proper 'Old Skool' Bradford Curry was needed. Therefore, I headed for one of MY - oh and that there Rick Stein guy's too - all time favourites - Karachi's Lamb and Spinach Balti. Quite simply one of the best dishes in Bradford - One of THE all time classics... end of. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYGGj6dQxj9qRK-rfzID0u1Mf5OZfw5OU9L3Md889Kyh8NWI0F_f60tZrtoP8JuykHUfDNiys996f94uxMlHVBmfj4MnTs00XlVw5F5GPbRVl5lJnXO3bQmeboWcV6oI5jtpDsNwq3PXbQ/s1600/IMG_2985.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYGGj6dQxj9qRK-rfzID0u1Mf5OZfw5OU9L3Md889Kyh8NWI0F_f60tZrtoP8JuykHUfDNiys996f94uxMlHVBmfj4MnTs00XlVw5F5GPbRVl5lJnXO3bQmeboWcV6oI5jtpDsNwq3PXbQ/s1600/IMG_2985.JPG" height="476" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, as always, Karachi served their Lamb and Spinach Balti freshly prepared, and sizzling away in a Balti Dish. It was verging on perfection! From the first to last mouthful it is perfect in every respect. The seasoning was spot on, as was the amount of heat, and the balance of good quality meat to sauce was spot on too. The flavours of meat were good, and not masked by the sauce. The sauce, by the way, was irony from the spinach, and fresh tasting with coriander. The fresh coriander stalks stirred in at the end added further herby fresh bite. There is also a good tartness balanced with an underlying sweetness, and a lingering garlicness which stayed with me the rest of the day! The dish looked right, smelt right and tasted right.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Like I say - virtually perfect.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3 included chapatis is all that is needed. Happy days.<br />
